Go Where the Locals Go

31 Aug

PhotobucketPhotobucket

OK we went to Myrtle Beach SC for the first time during the busiest week of the year, the second week in July, and what to do? First of all, -word to the wise-I should interject don’t take highway 501 -EVER- unless you want to get to the beach 4 hours later. Second, more importantly WHERE TO EAT? Roasted chicken skewered at the Medieval Campground? Ripley’s Believe it or not food? Hmm. Nascar niblets?? Pirate booty? Otherworldly Planet Hollyfwood? Or then again, what about Dollyfwood? NO! Resist the weird and resist the norm unless your two year old insists, of course. Live a little. ASK A LOCAL WHERE TO GO. When the locals say go to Bimini’s, just GO! Don’t mind that you think they are saying Bikinis, just GO! You will not be disappointed even if you have to wait outside. Opened since 1985, the owners desire was to bring the feel of the islands. Add the sounds of Jimmy Buffet, Island Reggae, and of course live beach music and you have not just a Restaurant, but the Bimini’s experience! Yes it will be packed, and YES it is worth the wait. Fresh Low Country Boil will be dumped on your table in front of you. Fresh seafood caught THAT DAY. Just remember this: even the fishermen eat at Bimini’s.

Esoteric Exhibitionism

Situated serenely and snugly less than one mile to Torrey Pines Golf Course, this San Diego Pacific Ocean escape is a veritable vacation unto itself. La Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa was recently listed on the “Hot List” for 2005-2006 by Conde Nast Traveler, one of only three properties in California, as well as awarded AAA’s prestigious Four-Diamond Award. By the way, to save you a few funny looks from the locals, La Jolla is pronounced “la hoy-ya”. Now, rolling up the sleeves to the food arena, the main restaurant at La Estancia is Adobe El Restaurante; this place is supreme. You will not be disappointed with anything you order here, and the service is nonplussed. Expensive, yes, like everything else in San Diego but a centenarian’s once in a lifetime hope, and if fate or luck would entice, otra vez. If the efficacy of a restaurant is merited by how delicious the food is, and how fulfilled and special you feel, then this restaurant wins for me. Word to the wise, if you walk to the nearest beach, it is imperative that I tell you in advance that it may be a nude beach. Ya, we found that out all by ourselves. Special memories await you here, and I would do it again in an Alaskan heartbeat.

Hate Early? Love Coffee! Come away with me!

26 Aug

Ug. Nothing can put a gal in a sour puss mood more than a disgustingly early morn. Never fear, Coffee is here! Chase those bad dreams away.

This morning I met with a small group of “Social Media Breakfast Atlanta” ‘techies’ in Marietta, GA at 7:00 am and had a lovely awakening while sweetly sipping my Gourmet coffee from the Atlanta Bread Company. When I first walked in, I was really impressed with the cleanliness and immediately hit with the smell of oven fresh baked bread that pleasantly assaulted my nose. I was instantly translated via brain receptor vacation to an Italian bread kitchen laced with good memories. Ah. Blink, blink. Hello! After an introduction or two I wandered to the virtually line less counter. The menu was expansive and priced modestly.

I asked the manager Andres how this whole “baked good” thing worked. He said all the pastries, breads, cookies and goodies are baked fresh every day all day, even the cinnamon rolls! He also chirped that all the items that are not consumed and purchased for the day are all donated to charities. (That is a nice thing to know.) Our group all chatted noisily away while noshing on their choice of either muffins, cinnamon rolls, freshly baked multigrain, plain or (even the adventurous went for) the Breakfast Bagel that was made-to-order, stuffed, then grilled, with bacon, egg and cheese. All was serenely sloshed down with their coffees, milks and fresh juices while we all were learning a bit more about how to harness the tides of the new social media techno wave as the hubbub drone of the frothing cappuccino maker chimed in for an announcement or two.

I felt in a quirky mood and ordered something a little out of the ordinary for me. For me personally, the flavor of the Gourmet Vanilla Nut coffee was not too overpowering for a flavored coffee, and surprisingly smooth and rich. I noticed especially that the coffee beans must have been roasted to perfection as there was no hint of burning or bitterness in the least bit and the delicate coffee oils still danced in my cup. I was very pleasantly surprised with the rich notes of the flavored gourmet coffee while I nibbled at the Raisin Bran muffin that was extremely fresh tasting, and moist, but no too heavy or oily. It was only $1.95 for a bottomless small size of Vanilla Nut coffee. (The largest small I’ve seen in a while!)

Overall, I give the venue a big A+ for it’s centrally located convenience and an excellent place to meet and greet for any small to medium sized community meeting. I would highly recommend this place for eat-in, take-out or catering. They offer modestly priced and delicious freshly baked goods for breakfast and an enticing menu of sandwiches and paninis for later day fare.

Warehouse 13 SyFy Emotional Eater?

25 Aug

Photobucket

My absolute new favorite supernatural television show (SyFy) is Warehouse 13. If you have not seen it yet you should check it out. I would LOVE to have her job! I could totally get into it. Secret agents working for the government dealing with ‘unknowns’. I would even fit right in with the emotional eater character Myka Bering played by Joanne Kelly. So far I’ve noticed that she has this tendency to eat mindlessly when she gets really stressed out.

I noticed something about myself in the last few years that I mindlessly grab food when I am extremely stressed out. Thankfully, I realize what I am doing after a few seconds and stop. It is funny though I never knew that about myself until recently over the last year and a half when I started journaling everything I ate.

Excerpts from a really good article from the Mayo clinic “How to stop emotional eating” say Learn to recognize true hunger. Is your hunger physical or emotional? If you ate just a few hours ago and don’t have a rumbling stomach, you’re probably not really hungry. Give the craving a few minutes to pass. Know your triggers. Look elsewhere for comfort. Don’t keep unhealthy foods around. Snack healthy. Eat a balanced diet. Exercise regularly and get adequate rest.

You can check out the show on SyFy Tuesdays at 9/8 pm central.

My new Hero

This little buddy has come in handy quite a few times. Pure Protein Bars. It comes in Chewy Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Deluxe, Chocolate Peanut Butter, S’Mores, Peanut Marshmallow Eclipse, Strawberry Shortcake and Blueberry Crumb Cake (my favorite to least favorite in that order). You know, I noticed in my last healthcare political rally I attended, that the skinny girls there had protein bars to munch on. Boy was I so proud to whip out my Pure Protein Chewy Chocolate Chip Bar. And I smiled like a little angel. Devil. Angel. They have come in so handy on the go, or when I crave something sweet or chocolate. Seriously, they have become my hero. Locally here at my neighborhood Publix Supermarket they go for 4 for $5 and I think at Target and Walmart they are even cheaper. Photobucket“>[New: Oh JOY! today I found them at Kroger for 10 for $10] Most recently I watched a kids movie GForce at the theater and snuck my Pure Protein Bar in, and enjoyed every last bite and did not feel in the least slighted, in fact I felt very satisfied and very proud of myself at the same time knowing I was eating something satisfying, and sweet and very very good for me too.

Brunch Ordering Angst: Veggie Heaven or Anaphylactic Hell?

21 Aug

Steamed Veggies in White Wine
Cafe Michel in Smyrna, GA
Photobucket

I recently visited two restaurants for Sunday brunch. The first, a local favorite restaurant of ours, Cafe Michel in Smyrna, Georgia and the other, an “organic” place in the Buckhead area of Atlanta, Georgia by the name of R. Thomas.

I had been to Cafe Michel many times before in it’s quaint nouveau city centre style, however this time it was different. We immediately noticed at Cafe Michel that the place had been renovated and was looking more ‘clean lined’ in its design and layout. We were at first distracted by the new faces there, (we believe it is now under new ownership) but by the time the food and drinks came, we were very pleasantly surprised. I ordered steamed veggies in white wine, with no salt and for a drink I had an espresso followed by their locally grown organic Blue Mountain house coffee. It couldn’t have been more perfect. The veggies were divinely seasoned with herbs and spices, and steamed to nutrition perfection in a luscious fruity white wine. To die for! After relishing every single one of the veggies, I noticed that on the bill the total sum of my coffees were surprisingly more expensive than the main course of my vegetables! I think my total was about $5 or $6. Nice to the figures! (Body AND bank).

We originally went to R. Thomas thinking that we were going to Huey’s, a special place to my husband and I, since we went there for our honeymoon breakfast for beignets and Louisiana chickory coffee. We sadly found out that Huey’s was now closed and out of business, but next door among cages of singing paradise tropical birds we found R. Thomas. As being one who now more often orders special orders or special preparation, I can only imagine the words and phrases used by the grumbling waitstaff and chefs about me. Now don’t get me wrong, I am generally the type of person who would never make a fuss about anything and would rarely if ever send food back to the chef. For me intrinsically it goes against my being to “order special”, however, with certain diet preponderances, the NEW me (for the last year and a half or so) has little problems being a bit more bold to ask for special preparations. “No butter, no oil, no dairy, no salt or salt substitutes and absolutely no sugar”. At R. Thomas, I was really surprised that a seemingly “organic” and “healthy” type restaurant had a haltingly deliberate waitstaff refusal to prepare my dish with no oil, and no cheese. Unfortunately the veggie omlette was dripping in some strange orange oil and even though I requested no cheese, it was sadly delivered with cheese oozing from the inside. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love cheese, but I decided to not make a fuss since we were meeting an important businessman for the first time, so I picked at it, and paid a hefty price there too. The omlette was about $9.00 and I lost no weight that week! So the lesson was learned to never ‘order special’ at R. Thomas. But the birds were cool. http://twitvid.com/BAA9F

Man! One would think that in our republic of America that I could ‘have it my way’ and order how I pleased at a restaurant, especially if it is food that I am putting into MY body, in an ‘organic’ restaurant, no less. WRONG! The handsome and seemingly accommodating waitress that reminded my ‘important businessman’ of Jamie Lee Curtis around the eyes, quickly and curtly said “oh no, we can’t cook without oil” and ‘we can’t cook with non-stick spray”… “because we’re organic”. What a bummer and what a waste. What was delivered was a plate of oily disappointment under the guise of ‘health food’ that I could hardly eat. Later, one of my ‘foodie’ friends, Polly, a tulip farmer who lives in the state of Washington that I’ve known online for about a year and a half now, snarly suggested to me the next time to I go out to eat to tell them that I am allergic to butter, oil, dairy, salt and sugar. That way they would not have to deal with me going into anaphylactic shock right in the middle of their precious restaurant. I will definitely remember to use that one! Thanks Polly, I will do just that! Not only will I be happier but healthier too.

Try this ‘SHAKE” on for size!

21 Aug

Photobucket

A refreshing high protein smoothie or shake not only can be filling, but also easy on the waistline. Try making an iced coffee using cooled coffee, with a sugar free mocha or vanilla syrup, ice and flavoring. For protein, you can add pasteurized egg whites or egg white powder, or protein powder. One of the favorites among high falutin’ foodies is to add 1/2 of an in season peach and a small handful of blueberries, and try a dash of apple pie or cinnamon spice for variations. You can really get creative with your shakes and smoothies and go health nut or fruity, or simple. Either way you choose, it is always a delicious nutritious way to get in your protein, increase your energy and slim your waistline. Remember to always check with your doctor before starting any weight loss plan!

A few online websites can track your calories, carbohydrates and protein, such as http://www.sparkpeople.com or http://forums.provida.com. For this recipe with peaches, http://www.sparkpeople.com shows at total of 77 cals, 10 carbs, 9 protein:
